SSO FELLOWSHIP

SSO Fellowship programme is for highly talented young musicians looking to gain valuable experience through performing regularly with the professional orchestra - the Selangor Symphony Orchestra, on the highest artistry. 

 

Open by audition only, the SSO Fellowship provides successful candidates the opportunities to work closely the SSO and this includes performing with the SSO, performing in masterclasses, discussions with SSO musicians, management, conductors, and guest soloists. 

INFO, REQUIREMENTS, & APPLY

ROLES OF A FELLOW

  • All successful Fellows will be in residency with the SSO for up to 2 years;

  • To be mentored by members of the SSO and to perform regularly in SSO concerts;

  • Serving as an ambassador in the community by performing outreach events;

  • Engaging with SSO leadership and mentors;

  • To participate in performing Masterclass coached by SSO musicians and visiting guest soloists.

REQUIREMENTS

To be qualified for being a Fellow, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

  • You must be aged 18 and below;

  • Resident of Malaysia;

  • Must be taking private lessons on a weekly basis with an instrumental teacher;

  • Have extensive orchestra experiences for at least 2 years;

  • Play and pass our audition pieces (see below "Audition Repertoires"). 

AUDITION REPERTOIRES

  • Applicants must prepare one etude (unaccompanied piece) plus one movement of a major concerto or work with orchestral accompaniment from the standard repertoire by any works composed on/before 1820.

  • The total duration of the chosen pieces shall not exceed 15 minutes. 

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  • Audition result is determined by SSO Artistic Advisory Committee

  • All successful Fellows will be in residency for 1 year (up to 2 years), renewable on every year upon reviewed by the SSO Artistic Advisory Committee

  • Please note that SSO Fellows do not get renumeration to perform in SSO concerts. 

HOW TO APPLY

1) Fill in and submit your online application form HERE

2) Provide YouTube video URL link of your recorded performance in the online application form. You may choose to have this as an Unlisted video for purposes of privacy, but please do not designate it as a Private video for ease of accessibility.

3) In your application include a current résumé (not more than one page in length, in PDF format, detailing your orchestra/ensemble experiences.

4) Submit RM150 application fee to the following bank details below and include the proof of transfer receipt in the online application form:

REQUIREMENTS OF VIDEO RECORDING

  • Applicants may choose to record with or without collaborative pianist (accompaniment).

  • If choose to record without a collaborative pianist, playing with a backing track is not necessary. 

  • Applicants will upload their recorded performance in the form of a YouTube video (or equivalent, like Vimeo) and provide the link to the performance on the online application form. You may choose to have this as an Unlisted video for purposes of privacy, but please do not designate it as a Private video for ease of accessibility. 

  • In the submitted recording, the following Information needs to be clearly stated in the text of the video description:
    -
    Full name of applicant (as appears in one’s IC or passport)
    -
    Age and instrument 
    - Repertoire: composers' names and title of piece (i.e. Etude Op.10 no.1 by Chopin, first movement from Spring Concerto no. 1 in E Major, Op. 8, RV269  by Vivaldi)

  • Applicants are advised to ensure that the audio and video of the recording are of high quality.

  • The video recording shall not be edited or enhanced. Audio and video shall be recorded simultaneously. 

  • For the two pieces in the video, the video recording shall be made in one continuous recording from a single fixed camera location.

  • The performer should be placed in the frame so that the instrument and the performer’s face and hands are clearly visible without obstruction. It is not necessary to include the entire participant within the frame.
