Orchestra Academy
The Preparatory Orchestra is designed to nurture young musicians at the early stages of their orchestral journey. It provides a supportive and structured environment where students develop essential ensemble skills, musical discipline, and confidence through regular rehearsals and guided instruction—preparing them for progression into the Selangor Symphony Youth Orchestra (SSYO).

We welcome any players who play the string and wind instruments to join us. The SSYO rehearses at its own orchestra studio on every Saturday in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya from 11:30am - 1:30pm. ​

Annual Activities:

Joint concerts with the SSYO

Other concerts include annual music camp and perform in music festival

Watch rehearsals of SSO

Opportunities to be conducted by SSO guest conductors

Participate in workshop coached by SSO guest soloists

Special workshop on educational topics presented by scholars and renowned guest speakers​
REQUIREMENTS, FEES, APPLY
(for Preparatory Orchestra)
REQUIREMENTS
Open for violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion, and harp.

Aged between 8 and 24;

Approximate minimum standard Trinity College London or ABRSM Grade 2 to 3 or equivalent. However, please note that Trinity College London and ABRSM grades are a guideline only and have no bearing on audition results or ensemble placement;

Pass our audition by submitting audition videos;

All players must have a private instrumental teacher and are taking weekly lessons on the instrument that they are applying.​​

HOW TO APPLY

Fill in and submit the Online Application HERE;

Submit the audition pieces which can be downloaded from HERE;

All applicants have the choice to submit the audition video from ONE of the following: 1) by email send to academy@sso.org.my. For large video files you may consider WeTransfer www.wetransfer.com. WeTransfer is the simplest way to share large files up to 2GB for free. 2) upload in Google Drive and email to us, 3) send audition video via Whatsapp to us at +6014-974-6885;

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Fill in and submit the Online Application;

You will be contacted by us to submit your video recording after we receive and review your application;

Upon successful on your audition, you will be prompted to make payment.

FEES

RM780/Term per player (per Term is 3 months);

All orchestra members pay by Term. Click HERE to view our Academy Calendar;

All new players are required to pay a one-time RM120 Application & Assessment Fee which comes with our SSYO T-shirt;

Please note that each Term is inclusive of public holidays and Term 4 ends in mid December.
